One question we get asked a lot is how much extra energy the 'smart' elements of our smart home has added to our overall energy bill. The answer is not so simple because one of the key objectives of our smart home is to actually save us energy and reduce our energy bills. It is also further complicated by the fact that our smart home has a distributed architecture and whilst much of it is centrally powered via a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), there are also many non-critical parts that are not.
