The smart home can help you recycle, whilst improving the quality of your life.
We have connected the three bins provided by our local council (project description). These are a general waste bin (grey), a recycling bin (blue) and a garden waste bin (green). The latter is charged for. The main reason for connecting them is to get reminders from our smart home to put the bins out for collection. They are usually stored in our back garden, near our kitchen (back) door because this makes it easier to dispose of waste. By accessing the council website, our contextual smart home also knows which bins need to be out on collection day.
We did look at sensing how full the bins are but this isn't really useful information to us because we already know the answer and there is nothing we can do with this information. It would be useful to our local council bin collection service though.
The collection and reuse of rain water is something we have spent a lot of time researching and tryin out ideas.
