In rooms like the kitchen, it is not desirable to use smoke sensors or smoke alarms because they can be falsely triggered by cooking, toasters and other kitchen items. For this reason, modern building regulations specify heat sensors instead. They can also be used in places with a high ambient air temperature, high humidity, dusty and dirty environments, where smoke sensors are not suitable.
In our contextual smart home every temperature sensor is also used to monitor absolute temperature and trigger the alarm if thresholds are crossed or a set temperature rising rate is exceeded. This makes heat sensors/alarms redundant in our home but they are often still required to meet building regulations.
