Our contextual smart home is a hybrid technology solution, using both wired and wireless home automation and networking technologies. Being 'technology agnostic' means that we are not tied to any particular technology, vendor or protocol. This means we are free to use the most appropriate technology for each particular feature in terms of performance, cost, reliability, etc. This also means we can use open-source hardware and software, along with 'best of breed' products from 3rd party suppliers.
Essentially we don't care which technology is being used, so long is performs as required. We can do this because we have also adopted a design based around technology abstraction. This doesn't mean that we can't or won't use proprietary technologies. It just means we have integrated them in such a way that we could swap them out later if required. Examples of this are Z-Wave and Philips Hue lighting.
Being technology agnostic is a lot easier if you use a unified communications protocol.
